The BMW 5 Series E12 520i is a compact executive car produced from 1972 to 1977. It was the first generation of the 5 Series and marked a significant departure from the earlier New Class sedans.

Engine and Performance

The 520i was powered by a 1,573 cc (96 cu in) inline-4 engine producing 90 horsepower (67 kW). The engine featured a single overhead camshaft, dual carbs, and a five-speed manual transmission as standard. A four-speed automatic transmission was also available. With a kerb weight of around 930 kg (2,049 lb), the 520i achieved a top speed of 165 km/h (103 mph) and could accelerate from 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in approximately 12 seconds.

Design and Features

The E12 520i featured a sleek and aerodynamic design with a sloping roofline, pop-up headlights, and a distinctive front grille. The interior was characterized by a compact dashboard layout with minimalist styling, featuring a prominent instrument cluster, a three-spoke steering wheel, and comfortable seating for four passengers.

Safety Features

The 520i came equipped with a range of safety features, including a padded dash, a collapsible steering column, and front seat belts. However, rear seat belts were not available as standard on most trim levels.

Trim Levels and Options

Over its production run, the E12 520i was offered in various trim levels, including:

  • Base: The most basic model featuring minimal equipment
  • L: A mid-range trim with added features like a radio and carpeting
  • LS: A higher-specification trim with amenities such as power steering, a sunroof, and air conditioning

Innovations and Legacy

The E12 520i was the first BMW to feature a range of innovative technologies, including anti-roll bars and a MacPherson strut front suspension. The car's success helped establish BMW as a major player in the compact executive market. Although it has largely been superseded by newer models, the E12 520i remains a sought-after collector's item among vintage car enthusiasts.

Production Numbers

Approximately 266,000 units of the E12 520i were produced during its five-year production run. The car was primarily manufactured in Germany at BMW's Plant Dingolfing and Plant Regensburg.
