The first generation of the Volvo 940/960 series was produced from 1990 to 1995. This range featured a new front fascia design, revised bumpers and trim, and the introduction of anti-lock braking system (ABS) as standard on all models.
Engine options included:
- A 2.3-liter inline-four cylinder B230F producing 116 horsepower
- A 2.3-liter turbocharged inline-four cylinder B230FT producing 143 horsepower
- A 2.7-liter inline-six cylinder B274 producing 140 horsepower
- A 2.7-liter turbocharged inline-six cylinder B274T producing 170 horsepower
Transmission options included a four-speed JAS manual and a three-speed AW-70 automatic, with some trim levels featuring a five-speed M45 manual.
Interior features included:
- A new dashboard design with revised instrumentation and trim
- Optional power steering and driver's seat memory
- Available premium audio system and other convenience features
Safety features included:
- Dual airbags as standard on all models from 1991 onwards
- Side impact protection, including reinforced doors and sills
- Improved structural integrity through the use of high-strength steel in the bodyshell
