The third generation of the Volvo V70 and XC70 was produced from 2007 to 2012. The 2.0-liter model, available from 2008 to 2010, featured a turbocharged inline-4 engine producing 230 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque.
Exterior Design:
The Generation 3 V70 and XC70 had a more angular design compared to their predecessors. The front grille was larger and more prominent, while the headlights were redesigned with LED daytime running lights. The rear spoiler was also restyled, and the tailgate featured a unique "wing" design.
Interior:
Inside, the cars boasted improved ergonomics and comfort. The dashboard was redone with new materials and trim options, including aluminum and wood accents. The seats were revised for better support and cushioning, while the infotainment system was upgraded to include a 7-inch touchscreen display and a navigation system.
Engine and Performance:
The turbocharged inline-4 engine (B4204S) provided excellent fuel efficiency and acceptable performance. It featured a variable geometry turbocharger (VGT), providing boost pressure up to 16 psi. The car's maximum speed was electronically limited to 130 mph for fuel-saving purposes, but the top speed could be increased to 140 mph with the optional Sport package.
Safety Features:
As expected from Volvo, the V70 and XC70 received a five-star Euro NCAP rating. Key safety features included six airbags (driver and passenger front airbags, two side bags, and two curtain airbags), Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Traction Control System (TCS), and a Whiplash Protection System (WHIPS).
Dimensions:
The V70/XC70's dimensions remained largely unchanged from the previous generation. The length was 187.3 inches (475 cm), width 72.4 inches (184 cm), height 59.6 inches (151 cm), and wheelbase 107.5 inches (273 cm). The vehicle's curb weight ranged between 3,700-4,100 pounds (1,680-1,860 kg) depending on the trim level.
Trim Levels:
The V70/XC70 were available in several trim levels during this generation:
- Base
- Kinetic
- Premier
- T6 (turbocharged inline-6 engine)
Suspension and Steering:
The cars employed a MacPherson strut front suspension with a stabilizer bar, while the rear featured a multi-link independent setup with an integrated rear stabilizer bar. The steering was speed-sensitive power-assisted rack-and-pinion type.
Brakes:
The V70/XC70 came equipped with four-wheel disc brakes featuring 13.6-inch (345 mm) front rotors and 12.8-inch (325 mm) rears. They were ventilated on the front axle for improved cooling and had a regenerative braking system to reduce wear.
Fuel Economy:
The 2.0-liter turbocharged engine achieved respectable fuel economy figures, with an estimated 25-30 mpg (9.4-7.8 liters per 100 km) in combined driving conditions. The exact numbers depended on the trim level and driving style.
Transmission:
A six-speed manual transmission was standard, while a six-speed automatic unit called Geartronic was available as an option. This transaxle featured adaptive shifting technology to optimize gear selection based on driver behavior and road conditions.
Wheels and Tires:
The V70/XC70 came with 16-inch or 17-inch alloy wheels, depending on the trim level. Tire sizes ranged from 225/60R16 for the base model to 235/45R17 on the higher trims.
