The Subaru Impreza (GU) is a compact car manufactured by Subaru from 2000 to 2007. It was available in sedan and wagon body styles.
Design and Features
The Impreza GU featured a more angular and aggressive design compared to its predecessor, with a larger front grille, new headlights, and a revised rear spoiler. The sedan had a more sloping roofline, while the wagon retained its boxy shape. The interior received updates, including a new dashboard, improved ergonomics, and additional storage compartments.
Powertrains
The Impreza GU was offered with various engine options:
- 1.6-liter flat-4 Boxer engine producing 108 horsepower (80 kW) in the base model
- 2.0-liter flat-4 Boxer engine producing 150 horsepower (110 kW) and 170 horsepower (130 kW) for higher trim levels
- A 2.5-liter flat-4 turbocharged Boxer engine producing 220 horsepower (164 kW) in the WRX model
A 5-speed manual transmission was standard, with a 4-speed automatic available as an option.
Safety Features
The Impreza GU featured a number of advanced safety features for its time, including:

Performance and Handling
The Impreza's Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system provided excellent traction and stability on various road surfaces. The WRX model boasted impressive acceleration, with a 0-60 mph time of around 5.8 seconds.
Trim Levels
Subaru offered the Impreza GU in several trim levels:
- Base: The entry-level trim with a 1.6-liter engine
- LS: A mid-range trim with a 2.0-liter engine and additional features
- L and LX: Higher-trim levels with more standard equipment, including leather seats and alloy wheels
Notable Changes
In 2004, the Impreza GU received significant updates, including a revised front bumper, new headlights, and improved interior trim.
The Subaru Impreza (GU) was eventually replaced by the 5th generation Impreza in 2007.
