The Rolls-Royce Corniche Series I was a luxury convertible produced by Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Ltd. from 1971 to 1986, and then continued until 1987 in some markets due to delays in the introduction of its successor.

Design and Features:

The Series I Corniche was based on the Silver Shadow platform and shared many mechanical components with it. However, the Corniche had a slightly shorter wheelbase and a more formal roofline, which gave it a unique character. The interior featured premium leather upholstery, power windows, and an air conditioning system, all of which were considered to be among the finest in the automotive world at that time.

Performance:

The Series I Corniche was powered by a 6,230 cc (380 cu in) V8 engine producing 132 horsepower at 4,750 rpm. The engine had a single Zenith-Stromberg carburetor and featured a five-speed manual transmission as standard, with an automatic overdrive option available. Despite its relatively modest power output, the Corniche was capable of achieving a top speed of around 115 mph (185 km/h) due to its low kerb weight and excellent gearing.

Production:

A total of 2,006 Series I Corniches were produced between 1971 and 1986. They featured a slightly revised rear end design in 1978, which included rectangular taillights instead of the earlier round ones.

Key Features by Model Year:

  • From 1971 to 1977, the Series I Corniche had a distinctive chrome-mesh grille.
  • In 1978, Rolls-Royce introduced a series of upgrades, including improved safety features and a revised interior design with new instruments.
  • The last Series I models were produced in 1986, but due to production delays, some continued to be sold until 1987.

Variations:

There were several special edition Corniches created during its lifespan. Notably, the Corniche II, which was essentially a facelifted version of the original with updated styling and new interior trim, started production in 1977. The Corniche III followed later, featuring further refinements to the exterior design.
