The Nissan Maxima is a mid-size sedan that has been in production since 1981. It was first introduced as an A12 model and was designed to be a more luxurious alternative to the standard Datsun (later Nissan) sedans of its time.
First Generation (A12, 1981-1984)
The first generation Maxima was based on the same platform as the Datsun 810. It featured a larger engine, improved suspension, and additional luxury features such as power windows, locks, and a premium audio system. The A12 model had a 2.0-liter inline-four engine producing 85 horsepower.
Second Generation (A14, 1985-1986)
The second generation Maxima was an all-new design with a more angular and aerodynamic body style. It featured a larger 2.0-liter inline-four engine now producing 95 horsepower and added features like a digital instrument cluster and improved sound insulation.
Third Generation (A15, 1988-1993)
The third generation Maxima introduced significant improvements in terms of power, handling, and comfort. The A15 model came with a larger 2.0-liter inline-four engine now producing 145 horsepower, as well as a front-wheel-drive layout, electronic anti-lock brakes (ABS), and improved suspension.
Fourth Generation (A16, 1993-1995)
The fourth generation Maxima was the first to offer a V6 engine, replacing the inline-four. The A16 model had a 3.0-liter V6 engine producing 160 horsepower. It also featured advanced safety features such as dual airbags and improved ABS.
Fifth Generation (A17, 1995-2002)
The fifth generation Maxima continued to offer the V6 engine but increased its power output to 190 horsepower. The A17 model had various trim levels offering different equipment packages, including a range of electronic features like traction control and a keyless entry system.
Sixth Generation (A18, 2003-2004)
The sixth generation Maxima marked a significant update with more rounded lines and improved interior space. It retained the same 3.5-liter V6 engine as its predecessor but increased power to 220 horsepower. This generation also introduced features like an electronic stability control system.
Seventh Generation (A19, 2004-2008)
The seventh generation Maxima was a comprehensive redesign with more aggressive styling and significant improvements in terms of ride quality and handling. The A19 model maintained the 3.5-liter V6 engine but increased power to 240 horsepower. It also featured advanced safety features such as side and curtain airbags.
Eighth Generation (A20, 2009-2014)
The eighth generation Maxima continued with a more aggressive front design and introduced a range of new technologies like touch-screen navigation and Bluetooth connectivity. The A20 model retained the same 3.5-liter V6 engine but saw power increase to 290 horsepower.
Ninth Generation (A21, 2015-2020)
The ninth generation Maxima marked another significant update with a new front design and improved interior space. It featured an all-new 3.5-liter V6 engine producing 300 horsepower, and also introduced advanced safety features such as forward emergency braking.
Tenth Generation (A32, 2021-present)
The tenth generation Maxima has been updated to feature a more aggressive exterior design and advanced technology inside, including a touch-screen infotainment system and semi-autonomous driving capabilities. The A32 model retains the same basic engine but sees improved efficiency.
