The BMW Z4 E30 is a rear-engine, rear-wheel drive roadster produced from 1989 to 1995. It was designed as an entry-level sports car and featured a more compact body than its predecessor, the E24.

Design and Features

The Z4 E30 had a shorter wheelbase and overall length compared to the E24, with a more angular and wedge-shaped design. Its dimensions included a length of 3,830 mm (150.4 in), width of 1,690 mm (66.5 in), height of 1,290 mm (50.8 in), and a wheelbase of 2,400 mm (94.5 in). The curb weight varied between 990 kg (2,178 lb) and 1,090 kg (2,403 lb).

Powertrain

Initially available with inline-four engines from the M42 family (1.6 L and 1.8 L), the Z4 E30 also featured a larger 2.0 L inline-four engine in later years (M42E20B). The M42 engines produced between 105 PS (77 kW) and 140 PS (103 kW), while the M50-derived engines produced up to 193 PS (142 kW).

Transmission

A five-speed manual transmission was standard across all Z4 E30 models, with a four-speed automatic optional for certain trim levels. The Getrag five-speed was used in most roadster variants.

Performance and Handling

With its smaller size and light weight, the Z4 E30 offered excellent handling and agility. The roadster's rear-wheel drive layout provided dynamic cornering capabilities, making it enjoyable to drive on twisty roads.

Production Numbers

During its production run (1989-1995), BMW produced approximately 61,500 units of the Z4 E30.

Notable Upgrades

Over time, several upgrades were made available for the Z4 E30, including sport suspension, a leather interior package, and higher-performance engine options.
