The BMW X5 is a mid-size luxury SUV produced by BMW since 1999. It was the first vehicle in its class to feature all-wheel drive (AWD) and a transverse engine layout. The original E53 generation was launched as a 2000 model, featuring a 3.0-liter inline-six engine producing 217 horsepower.
In 2004, the second-generation X5, code-named E70, replaced its predecessor with an updated design and more powerful engines. A larger 300-horsepower V6 engine became standard on higher trims. This generation also introduced xDrive, BMW's all-wheel-drive system, which features a transfer case that can shift power between the front and rear axles.
