The BMW 545i is a high-performance variant of the E60/E61 5-Series range, produced from 2004 to 2010. This model was designed to bridge the gap between the standard 530i and the M5 in terms of performance.
Engine
Under the hood lies a 3.7-liter inline-six engine (M52TU), producing 333 horsepower at 5900 rpm and 324 lb-ft of torque at 2950 rpm, mated to a six-speed manual transmission or a five-speed automatic. This powerplant features BMW's VANOS variable valve timing technology.
Transmission
The standard transmission was the SMG (Sequential Manual Gearbox) – a type of semi-automatic gearbox that utilized a clutchless shifting system for improved performance and smoothness. A five-speed Steptronic automatic transmission with adaptive logic and tiptronic function (steering wheel-mounted gear change) was also available.
Performance
The 545i accelerates from 0-60 mph in approximately 5.4 seconds with the manual transmission, while the automatic takes around 6 seconds. The top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph (250 km/h).
Handling and Chassis
To handle the increased power output, BMW incorporated several modifications to the standard E60/E61 platform:
- Sport-tuned suspension
- Upgraded stability control system
- Stiffer anti-roll bars
- Lightweight 19-inch alloy wheels shod with high-performance tires
These enhancements significantly improved handling and reduced body roll when cornering.
Interior and Features
Inside, the 545i shared many features with its standard counterparts, such as:
- Leather upholstery
- Aluminum trim accents
- Premium audio system
- Navigation system (optional)
However, specific sport-oriented touches included:
- Unique instrument cluster and steering wheel design
- Sport seats with lumbar support
- BMW's Logic7 premium sound system
Trim Levels
The 545i was available in several trim levels, including the entry-level 545i, Luxury Package, and Sport Package. Each variant offered distinct features aimed at catering to different customer preferences.
Warranty and Maintenance
BMW guaranteed their vehicles with a 4-year/50,000-mile warranty (whichever comes first), as well as complimentary maintenance for one year or 15,000 miles. Regular servicing was necessary every 12 months or when the mileage reached 30,000 kilometers.
Legacy
The E60/E61 generation of BMW's 5-Series range has become a sought-after model among driving enthusiasts and collectors due to its exceptional performance capabilities, handling prowess, and overall durability. This, combined with its rarity as a high-performance variant within the series, contributes to its desirability among classic car aficionados.
