The BMW 2 Series is a compact luxury coupe and convertible produced by German automaker BMW since 2014. It was designed to replace the 1 Series Coupe (E82/E88) and was built on the F20/F21 1 Series platform, but with a shorter wheelbase and a wider track.

F22 Generation (2013-2017)

The first generation of the 2 Series, known as F22, was launched in 2014. It was available as a coupe and a convertible, with the latter being called the M240i Convertible until 2016 when it was renamed to 228i Convertible. The F22 model range consisted of:

  • 220d ( diesel engine, producing 184 horsepower)
  • 230i (petrol engine, producing 248 horsepower)
  • M235i (high-performance petrol engine, producing 322 horsepower)

F23 Generation (2017-2021)

The second generation of the 2 Series, known as F23, was launched in 2017. It built upon the success of its predecessor and offered:

  • Improved efficiency from the 230i model with an M Sport variant
  • The introduction of a new base model called the 220d xDrive (with all-wheel drive)
  • An updated design language with new headlights and taillights

Trim Levels

Throughout both generations, the 2 Series was available in various trim levels:

  • Luxury Line: focused on comfort features like leather upholstery
  • Sport Line: added performance-oriented elements such as sport seats
  • M Sport: emphasized handling capabilities through suspension upgrades
  • xDrive (all-wheel drive) models were also offered across trims

Features and Technology

The 2 Series featured an array of modern technologies, including:

  • Infotainment systems like iDrive and the larger Professional Navigation system
  • Driver assistance systems such as lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and automatic emergency braking
  • Lighting options included LED headlights and taillights on later models

Engine Options

Throughout its production run, the 2 Series offered a range of petrol (gasoline) engines:

  • Inline-three (B37/B38) engines producing 136 to 228 horsepower
  • Inline-four (N20/N26) engines producing 184 to 248 horsepower
  • Turbocharged inline-six (S55) engine in high-performance M240i models, producing 322 horsepower

Performance

The 2 Series was praised for its agile handling and responsive steering. The high-performance M235i and later the M240i boasted quick acceleration and a thrilling driving experience.

Reliability and Maintenance

BMW's reputation for reliability is reflected in the 2 Series' performance. Regular maintenance costs were comparable to other luxury models, with oil changes recommended every 12,000 miles (19,312 kilometers).

Safety Ratings

The 2 Series received generally good safety ratings across various markets:

  • The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave it a perfect five-star rating in frontal and side crash tests
  • The European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP) rated the F22 model four out of five stars for adult occupant protection

Discontinuation

Production of the 2 Series was discontinued with the end of the F23 generation. It has been replaced by the 4 Series Coupe and Convertible, which share some similarities but are distinct models.

Overall, the BMW 2 Series offered a compelling combination of performance, handling, and style that resonated with driving enthusiasts.
