The best way to remove rust from my 1963 PV444's body

I'm looking to remove rust from my '63 PV444's body and was wondering if anyone has experience with this process. I've tried various methods in the past but would love to hear about others' successes (and failures) with different techniques. Does anyone have a recommended method for removing rust without damaging the underlying metal or affecting the existing paint?
