MK8 Golf: The Best Engine Option? Petrol or Diesel?

As a proud owner of an MK8 Golf, I'm torn between choosing petrol or diesel for my new vehicle. The performance difference is well-documented, but what about fuel efficiency and emissions? Has anyone had experience with either engine type in the MK8? Which one do you think is the better option?
