How to upgrade the suspension on your VW Beetle

I'm looking to upgrade the suspension on my '68 Beetle and was wondering what options are available for improving ride quality and handling. I've considered coilovers, but want to hear about any other upgrades or mods that have been successful with others who've made similar changes. Any advice or recommendations would be great.
