Can I use modern parts to upgrade my classic VW Beetle?

I've had my classic '68 VW Beetle for years and I'm itching to give it a bit more power and modern amenities. The question is, can I safely install modern parts like a fuel injection system, electronic ignition, and a more efficient cooling system without compromising the car's original character? Has anyone else done this successfully?
