Does the Subaru Forester Really Go Off-Road?

I've heard mixed reviews about the Subaru Forester's off-road capabilities and I'm curious to know if it really lives up to its promise of being a capable off-roader. Does the Forester's Symmetrical AWD system actually make a difference on rough terrain or is it more suited for light trail use?
