How to identify and fix common issues with the W126's rear air suspension system

I'm experiencing and trying to troubleshoot issues with the rear air suspension system on my W126 Mercedes-Benz. Specifically, I've noticed sudden drops in ride height, inconsistent compression, and sometimes the system won't engage at all. Has anyone else encountered these problems or found a solution?
