As someone who's done both, I can attest that proper training and knowledge are key to successful DIY maintenance, but for complex issues or older vehicles, seeking a professional mechanic with Land Rover experience is often the safer bet.

As an owner of a Series III, I can attest that proper maintenance by a professional saved my vehicle from a premature demise after years of DIY work elsewhere resulted in costly repairs. A balance must be struck between cost savings and quality upkeep.

I've been maintaining my Defender myself for years and I have to say it's been a great experience. Not only does it save me money but also gives me a deeper understanding of how my vehicle works. Of course, there are some jobs that are better left to the pros, like timing belt replacements or complex electrical work, but for routine maintenance and repairs, I think DIY is the way to go. It's not just about saving money, it's about being hands-on with your vehicle and having a sense of accomplishment when you complete a job yourself.

I've been working on my Series III Landy for years now, and I have to say that while professional maintenance can be tempting, I'm convinced that DIY is the way to go. Not only does it save me a pretty penny in labor costs, but it's also given me a deeper understanding of how my vehicle works. That being said, there are definitely some jobs that require specialized tools and expertise - like the rebuild of my Defender's engine a few years ago. But for routine maintenance and repairs, I think DIY is more than capable. I've found that Land Rovers have so many quirks and specificities that only a seasoned owner/technician can truly understand. And let's be honest, there's something satisfying about getting your hands dirty and seeing the fruits of your labor up close. Of course, this isn't to say I wouldn't consider taking my vehicle to a professional if it were in for some serious issue - but for most routine maintenance and repairs, I'm happy to take on the challenge myself.
