Defender's fuel economy - How bad is it, really?

Just got back from a road trip in my Defender and I'm shocked at how bad the fuel economy is. Typical driving conditions with moderate speeds and light loads and I'm seeing around 6-8mpg, which is way off what the manufacturer claims. Has anyone else noticed this or am I just doing something wrong?
