Defender Maintenance Costs - Are they as bad as everyone says?

I've recently purchased a Defender and was surprised to find out how expensive maintenance costs can be. I'm looking for honest feedback from fellow owners on their experiences with servicing, repairs and replacement parts. Are the costs as high as everyone claims, or am I just unlucky?
