I've been doing some research on Kia's safety record and I'm not entirely convinced that it lives up to the hype. While they do have a decent number of 5-star ratings in certain models, a closer look at the data reveals some concerning trends.
For example, in the NHTSA's rollover testing, several Kia models had higher than average rates of rollovers, which is particularly alarming given the design and build of their vehicles. Additionally, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has noted that some Kia models have lower-than-average ratings in certain crashworthiness tests.
Furthermore, when you compare Kia's safety record to other brands, it starts to look a bit shaky. While they do have some strong performers like the Optima and Sorento, they also have some serious weak links like the Sportage and Soul. When compared to brands like Honda or Toyota, which consistently rank high in both crashworthiness tests and real-world reliability, Kia's safety record doesn't seem quite as solid.
I'm not saying Kia is a bad brand by any means, but I do think they need to step up their safety game if they want to be taken seriously alongside the big boys.
