Just had my first breakdown in the Multipla - what did I do wrong?

So I've had my Fiat Multipla for about a year now and just experienced my first breakdown on the motorway. It just stopped running with no warning lights or signs of overheating, fuel pressure etc. Had to be recovered by the AA, was left stranded for hours. What could have caused this?
