Fiat Fastback's rear spoiler: Does it actually improve downforce?

I've been reading a lot about aerodynamics and was wondering if the rear spoiler on my new Fiat Fastback actually does anything to improve downforce. Has anyone else fitted one or noticed any difference in handling? Are there any mods or upgrades that can further enhance its effectiveness?
