What's the best way to upgrade the brakes on a 1982 New Yorker?

I'm planning to upgrade the brake system on my '82 New Yorker and I'd like to hear about others' experiences with this project. What's been done by way of upgrades or improvements - rotor, caliper, master cylinder, etc.? Any specific recommendations for a Mopar purist who wants to preserve as much of the original character as possible?
