Do I Really Need a Performance Chip for My E65?

I've been looking into upgrading my E65 with a performance chip to squeeze out some extra horsepower and torque, but I'm not entirely convinced it's worth the cost. Has anyone else done this on their BMW? What kind of gains can I expect? Are there any downsides to consider?
