Upgrading from a 3 Series to an E60/E61 BMW 5 Series: Good decision?

I'm considering trading in my E90 3 series for a higher trim level of an E60/E61 BMW 5 series. Has anyone else made this switch? Are there significant differences between the two models that I should be aware of before making the purchase? What are some pros and cons to consider?
