My E39 M5 is making a strange noise... help!

I've got about 80k miles on my E39 M5 and I'm starting to hear a strange whining noise coming from the engine area when it's idling. It's a pretty high-pitched sound that seems to be getting louder over time. Anyone else experienced something similar? Could it be related to the VANOS system or something else entirely?
