E28 535i Project - Seeking Advice on Engine Rebuild

I'm planning to rebuild my E28 535i engine and I'd appreciate some advice on the best approach. The engine has around 180k miles and shows signs of wear, but is still running well for now. Should I just rebuild it as-is or consider upgrading to a later M30 motor?
